Premier’s College Tour Returns for Second Term
10 September 2008
Premier Dr. Ewart F. Brown will resume the Premier’s College Tour on September 19th in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Premier created the College Tour in 2007 to encourage Bermuda’s young people to bring their talents back to the Bermuda workforce after graduating.
The Premier said: “We have a long commitment of connecting the Government to young adults and this is an extension of that practice.
“I plan to capitalize on the dialogue and energy we generated last time so that young people know we are consistently thinking about them even though they spend only part of the year here in Bermuda.
“One of the main achievements of the last College Tour was the Government website: careers.gov.bm. When students told me they wanted a way to keep up with the constantly changing jobs opportunities back home, we went to work and now we have a tool that fills a void.”
The private sector has partnered with the Government to talk with university students about the opportunities waiting for them at home. On September 19th, Kanika Cameron, Human Resources Specialist at Butterfield Bank will be the event’s guest speaker. Ms Cameron, 26, is a product of Butterfield Bank’s highly regarded Management Trainee Program.
The Institute for Chartered Accountants Bermuda is also expected to send a representative to dialogue with students and actively recruit.
“Last year students and employers built some extremely valuable relationships,” the Premier said. “I’m encouraging students to show up with their A game intact, ready to participate.”
The Halifax College Tour will be held at the World Trade Center consisting of a networking reception followed by dinner. There will also be a question and answer period for students to dialogue with the Premier in an open forum.
Meantime, while in Halifax, the Premier is scheduled to meet with Premier Rodney MacDonald of Nova Scotia as well as Canadian Tourism and Transportation officials.
The next stop on the Premier’s College Tour 2008 will be London.
