Government Wants Control of the Police
6 June 2007 | Bermuda Sun
Government has stepped up its row with the Governor by asking him to hand over control of the police.
The Governor, appointed by the British Government, is constitutionally responsible for four key areas: external affairs, defence, internal security and the police.
But today in the Senate, Public Safety Minister David Burch said he is "sick and tired" of trying to improve the police service when it is ultimately outside of his control.
He then went on to say: "I have a solution to this untenable situation - Section 62 of the Constitution allows for the Governor to delegate, on certain conditions, his responsibilities to the Premier or any other Minister."
He continued: "I can advise Senate today that I have written to the Governor inviting him to delegate his authority and the responsibility for the police to the minister with responsibility for public safety." MORE! ยป
