Legal Minds Praise Dame Lois for her 'Towering Influence'
8 June 2007 | Bermuda Sun
Gown and wig clad attorneys gathered yesterday to remember the one lawyer that made them want to enter the profession.
Dame Lois Browne-Evans was remembered during a special sitting of the Supreme Court for being a "towering influence as an advocate for social justice."
The assembled mass of lawyers, family members, friends and Supreme Court judges recalled her strong personal and professional accomplishments.
A reverent quiet came over the courtroom - the scene of so many of the Dame's legal battles - as the judges began to pay tributes to Bermuda's first-ever female lawyer.
That was punctuated by applause and laughter from the 16 speakers on hand, who reflected on their experience with the human rights icon - reflections on the life that helped to shape their own. In his flowing, articulate language, Puisne Judge Ian Kawaley called the Dame a "towering influence as an advocate for social justice" and appeared ready to assume her mantle as he jibed at lawyers in commercial practice "serving those already rich or aspiring to become richer."
