Jane Correia's Candidacy Speech

26 July 2007

It is with great pride that I stand here today with Premier Dr. Ewart Brown as a candidate for the Bermuda Progressive Labor Party for Constituency 8 - Smith's South.

People, who know me well, will know that I have given much though to my candidacy for the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party. I have given my decision much thought, I have thoroughly researched the PLP, and I have searched my soul and today I can say that my commitment to the PLP is solid and I have the full support of my family.

I am no longer prepared to sit back and complain as many of us have a tendency to do, but rather become involved and do what I can to serve the people of Bermuda. I say serve because I believe that when one enters politics it should be for one reason only and that is to serve the people.

I believe the only way forward for Bermuda is for a society where respect is tantamount. We must work together to heal race relations in this Country and acknowledge the wrongs of the past that is why I salute Dr. Brown for initiating the Big Conversation.

I have a great deal of respect for our Premier, The Hon. Ewart Brown and his vision for this country. Dr. Brown is a caring individual who understands the needs of our people – equal opportunity for all in all sectors of our economy including international business, government and the private sector. I believe that under his leadership and the promises that will be contained in the Party's platform we will move Bermuda forward. I am excited about being a member of the team that will make history with three straight victories at the polls.

I would like to thank my husband Dennis, my daughter Danielle and son Max and the rest of my family and friends for believing in what I am doing and respecting and encouraging me on this journey. Thank you.
