PLP Rank and File Applaud Budget
Today Progressive Labour Party Chairman David Burt threw the weight of his Party's support behind the 2009/2010 Budget tabled in the House of Assembly Friday.
"The fact that our Government is able to expand services and provide a strong and stable social safety net during these tough economic times is a testament to the sound fiscal management of Minister Paula Cox and the PLP Government Team," said Mr. Burt.
In the Party's last Election Platform and the Government's 2008/2009 Budget there is a consistent commitment to social programs. Mr. Burt applauded Minister Cox for continuing that tradition which remains vitally important to the Party's supporters.
Friday Minister Paula Cox presented a comprehensive budget that fulfills a major PLP election promise, provides relief for the unemployed and holds the line on taxes.
"The free daycare programme, free public transportation for students and the free tuition at the Bermuda College will continue. Unemployment assistance will be available to those in need," said Minister Cox in the budget statement. "FutureCare, the upgraded health plan for senior citizens, will be launched in April 2009. In addition, Government will provide further assistance and incentive to individuals and families seeking to purchase their first home by exempting the conveyance of certain residential property from stamp duty."
After reviewing the budget statement Mr. Burt said: "A big tax break for first-time home buyers. DayCare now serving 300-plus families. Relief for the unemployed. No new taxes. And, most importantly, FutureCare is on track for April 2009. This fiscally sound budget provides an expanded social safety net, creates and protects jobs and ensures that Bermuda's business environment remains strong, stable and competitive.
"Not only does this Budget hit the mark for the local and international business community, it also provides the tenderness our country needs in these tough times."
