John Barritt Reiterates UBP's Pro-Guest Worker Policies
In today's paper, UBP MP John Barritt reiterated his party's commitment to representing the interests of guest workers. He also played political games and misrepresented this website.
The PLP is committed to improving the quality of life for hard working Bermudian families. That's why we pushed for free day care for Bermudians. We believe that it is the obligation of the government of Bermuda to protect and improve the quality of life of the people of Bermuda. The truth is, free day care is a benefit, not a fundamental human right. Given all of his advocacy on behalf of guest workers, perhaps Mr. Barritt has forgotten who he was elected to represent?
Later in the article, Minister of Social Rehabilitation Dale Butler showed why Mr. Barritt and the UBP's guest worker advocacy is pure politics. Minister Butler:
The UBP were not genuine in their concern about non-Bermudians because if they were they would have prepared a motion. They were ill-prepared for the debate and the lack of a motion only underlines this.
During all of the stakeholder discussions they never mentioned it. No human resource office came to a single meeting or sent in a response. Neither did we hear from non- Bermudians themselves.
What we did hear from were the voters of the country who wanted their needs met while they see non-Bermudians with mandatory housing benefits that they do not have so there is a balance in the end in that employers do not provide housing for Bermudians but must in the first instance provide for the non-Bermudian.
Again, if the UBP were genuinely concerned about Bermudians they would have stressed this and if they were genuine about non-Bermudians they would have put forward a motion."
Who is that one that's really playing politics, Mr. Barritt? If you were so concerned about the guest workers, why didn't you bring it up in the meetings? And, why didn't you put forward a motion on the issue? This is political posturing pure and simple.
Perhaps we shouldn't, but, we will give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't see that a correction was appended to this website.
