Deceiving Dunkley in Denial
5 December 2007 - 6:29pm
Leader of the UBP, Michael Dunkley, has predictably responded with denials to the Progressive Labour Party advertisement highlighting his party's very harsh stance on important issues. We stand by the accuracy of our ad and refer the voting public to the following facts:
- The UBP's 'Agenda for Change' speaks specifically to "Preventive Detention". Question: Is Mr. Dunkley distancing himself from the UBP Platform?
- Michael Dunkley says the ad is full of lies. However, it is a matter of public record that he said: "We will close down Government TV."
- The UBP letter to the Department of Telecommunications accusing HOTT of violating the terms of its license is a matter of public record.
- Michael Dunkley speaks of misleading advertising. Will he deny the UBP's funding of the anti-Independence campaign which is the big lie of this election campaign?
- Our ad examines Mr. Dunkley's stance on human rights, democracy, disenfranchisement—all very serious matters—and he should be held to close scrutiny by the voters. He campaigns for accountability but when he gets a dose of it he screams foul. And to brand irrefutable facts as lies is as misguided as branding cultural TV programming as propagandist – it raises questions about his character and consequently his fitness for public office.
- It is a fact that Michael Dunkley voted in Parliament against the abolition of hanging and flogging. His past positions may be politically inconvenient, but Mr. Dunkley has repeatedly stated he wants to discuss the issues and the record. When the PLP stood up to ban hanging and flogging, Michael Dunkley said no. There is nothing that leads us to believe his position has changed.
