Colonel Burch retired as Commanding Officer of The Bermuda Regiment after 20 years of active and distinguished military service. In government, Col Burch Serves as the Government Leader in the Senate and was appointed Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing following the 2007 general election. He was appointed Minister of National Security in November 2010.

In October 2011, he was chosen as the candidate to represent the Progressive Labour Party in Constituency #27, Warwick North Central.
